Last Days of Summer

Summer has sadly slipped away, considering the temperatures are starting to drop, the leaves are beginning to change, and the start of fall is just around the corner. We made the best of one of our last days by visiting beautiful Second Beach in La Push. It never gets old to day trip to the ocean.

Endless Energy

Of course, I tended to play a bit with some of my camera, enjoying the last of it all.

As sad as we were to watch summer slip away, especially when I drove Maddy to school for the first day, God reminded me how awesome of a place we live in and how beautiful our Mother Earth is. After I dropped her off and was enjoying my last day with Jaxson before I headed back to work the next day, I drove to the Ediz Hook and was lucky to watch a pod of  orcas feast on salmon in our harbor for well over four hours. It was incredible. We typically do not see orcas in the harbor. They were beautiful. I was kicking myself, however, for not having my zoom lens with me. Here are the shots I was able to capture of these majestic creatures.

This is in the Strait of Juan De Fuca and I saw a large dorsal fin as I was driving the Hook. I can't express how excited I was!

After researching a bit more, these guys are some of the resident orcas. Resident Orcas feed on fish while Biggs or Transients eat mammals. Pretty cool!

Cape Alava Camping Adventure!

We are definitely trying to make the most of our time in Washington and since the weather has been gradually warming up, with beautiful blue skies and sunshine, we cannot resist getting outside. And, because hiking is free and camping is pretty inexpensive, we have been doing A LOT of it lately. Granted, our excursion to Oregon was not cheap, it was still a pretty inexpensive weekend getaway and worth the drive! In her new hiking pack Cape Alava at high tide Crossing a bridge We discovered one place, though, called Cape Alava, via one of our trail/hiking books. We went out last weekend, and it is a good 3 mile hike to the coast, from Lake Ozette, and then another 3 mile hike back to the parking area, (so 6 round trip). The loop itself, to Sand Point, is 9 miles total. We got there when tide was fairly high, so we didn't travel down the coast too far, as you can make a complete loop (3 miles down the beach and then another 3 miles on a second trail, that splits at th...

Updates and Such

It's been sometime since I last updated the blog, but figured I better get on it. The school year is in full swing and we've been busy, as usual doing all the things we do between parenting, enjoying our weekends, and routine. No major projects are holding us back this year, so we've been trying to soak up every ounce of the ending seasons as we can. Fall was slow to start here, but her beauty and glory haven't left and I am sure will stick around well into November. That is the fortunate part of the PACNW. Here are the highlights up to this point: August Jax started Preschool and Maddy is in the 3rd grade. So far, they are doing well. Jax loves going to school and is always eager when he gets to "ride the bus to Maddy's school." Here are their annual school pics: Jumping into 3rd Grade September We enjoyed a few adventures, from hiking, whale watching, and camping. We camped at our favorite spot along the Strait...

Bearing With Me

We aren’t getting an opportunity to travel this summer, but we’re making the best of our staycation in beautiful Washington. Honestly, there is so much to explore in our state and even on our Peninsula, I don’t think we will ever be bored of finding something magical and interesting to see or do. Our family motto is, “it’s always an adventure” and sometimes, even the smallest adventure turns into a story of a lifetime. My daughter has been fascinated with the stars and space since she was five and wanted a telescope for her birthday one year. I suggested to her that we drive up Hurricane Ridge early morning to let me practice some astrophotography, as well as catch the sunrise. She was excited about seeing Neowise, the comet that is gracing us with its presence in the month of July. The last comet I recall seeing was Hale Bop, back in 1997. I remember driving across the open plains of Wyoming with my parents, who were actually en route to a couple of job interviews and leaving u...
