Goonies Forever---Excursion to Astoria

I love the 80's flick The Goonies and the movie was filmed on location in Astoria, Oregon, which is about a 4 hour drive from where we live. So, investigating the surrounding area, Brad and I decided to go camping at Ft. Stevens State Park, which is between Astoria and Seaside, Oregon. We figured it would be quiet and quaint, as it borders the Pacific Coast and the mouth of Columbia River. Besides, we figured we could take the day to drive down on Saturday, along highway 101, and stop along the way for our dog's and Madelynne's sake.

Let me preface that is always an adventure with the Schroeder clan to go camping or even just a minor outing. Heck, last weekend we went on an 8 mile hike in flip flops. We left bright and early and after going through our checklist, we realized we had left all our breakfast stuff at the house. No worries, as we would just buy stuff in Aberdeen when we stopped for lunch.

We continued our drive down across the Columbia River, into Oregon and then onto Ft. Stevens State Park. Our second issue was a dead battery in the visitor's parking lot, so a park ranger had to help us get the truck going again.

Hoping for a quiet, relaxing weekend, we were a bit taken aback by the amount of campers in the park at the end of April. We learned that there was a Seafood Festival taking place in Astoria that weekend. It didn't deter our plans, though. We even considered hopping on a shuttle to go to the festival, but decided to just hang out on site.

We set up camp, and decided to take a hike around the park. Needless to say, our hike turned out to be way more than we bargained for and calculating our route back, it ended up being 12 miles round trip. We even had to stop to carry Madelynne for a bit, and when we did, Bella literally lay down in the middle of the trail.

Once back at camp, people kept walking by and making comments about our bungee cord we had tied between two trees to keep the dog's tethered so they wouldn't escape or run after people or other dogs. A couple of drunk girls walked into it and we think it happened again when we were gone, because we found a plastic bottle full of water right by it. I think we were the only tent campers, as we were surrounded by people in their lavish RVs. After the air mattress deflated for a second time, I was a tad envious of those RVs. Luckily, Madelynne had no issue sleeping through the night and did a fine job.
Thank God for Pack and Play's!
Bright and early Sunday, we made breakfast and headed off to explore the state park and area. Since we were only a few minutes from Seaside and Cannon Beach, we went there and then backtracked to Astoria.

We didn't get to spend as much time in Astoria as we would have liked, but we are definitely making a second trip to Astoria! Besides, I have to find all the cool Goonie locale and take a picture of the elementary school where Kindergarten Cop was filmed (we drove by it!). But we definitely had a great time. I would say our first camping excursion was a success!

  1. The first time we went camping with Xavier, he got his first tooth after four days! The pack n play worked perfect for us, too.

For the future's not ours to see...

There is so much going on in our world today that is negative. I get irritated with watching the news and seeing such drama the media portrays. I never really paid that much attention to it until I had Madelynne and then everything changed about my perception of the world. It is scary, out there, when all you want to do is shelter and protect your little one. Maybe I am coming to the terms with growing older and realizing that life on this great planet is limited and to make the most of it. Being a SAH mom has really caused me to think and reflect on so many different things. It hasn’t always been sweet, happy thoughts, either. I know a few weeks ago I was really concerned for the end of the world and for my daughter and future generations that have to endure such drastic changes that will continue to occur over time. I find myself getting caught up with questions about my faith and my journey as a Christian and feeling lost and not knowing who to turn to or talk to about such conflict

Just B

In teaching poetry and preparing my kiddos this week for their poetry presentations, we watched a few spoken word poets via pre-selected versions on YouTube. One video that stood out the most was from the 2012 TED talks from spoken word poet, Sarah Kay. The poem is a perfect depiction of having a child and advice that a mother wants to carry on to her daughter...If you have an opportunity, I'd check it out on YouTube and just watch the "If I should have a daughter" or the title of the poem is "B". Sifting through the poem, I extracted a few of my favorite quotes and a few recent pictures of Madelynne to accompany them. Enjoy.  "...Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away" (Sarah Kay, TED Talks, 2012).  “...Remember, your Mama is a worrier, and your Papa is a warrior, and you are the girl with small hands and big eyes who never stops asking f

Final Summer Adventure: Iceland 2019

Instagram definitely has a way of enticing the hungriest of the wanderers to explore the various bucket list places. Iceland has been one of those for me since I watched an enticing video from a friend and was immediately set on going there. When, how, and what we would do was all under speculation, but once I set it on my vision/prayer board and started planning, the dream became a reality and here we are, in 2019, recapping a family adventure that was well worth the expense. A few notes about our trip before I take you on a picturesque journey of some of our favorite stops. If you’re planning your own Icelandic adventure, do note that gas is not cheap. It is the one thing that put us over budget, and something we didn’t plan enough for. So while cheap flights look appealing, do your research! Food is also equally expensive, however, we did budget for that! We even had a bag left over at the end of our trip, which we happily donated to the Kuku Campers reuse shelf.  Being
