Redwoods California

After we spent a few days in Oregon, we headed to Northern California where we trekked around the Redwoods and beaches. It was beautiful. Damion was in awe and mentioned to us that he was so grateful to have come here, since it was a place he had always wanted to visit. He was so stoked to see the tallest trees in the world and even got a bit emotional about how beautiful it was. Having not been to the Redwoods since I was a kid, it was a feeling quite indescribable to be back. The trees made you feel pretty small and ant like. There were some trees you could walk into and it was still unbelievable the girth and mass of them.

We were also lucky to experience cooler weather than from inland, with the temps reaching maybe the mid 70s the entire time we were there. Twice we witnessed beautiful fog banks taking over the coast from above, which just looked like the ocean being swallowed by clouds. Near where we camped, we were fortunate to watch the sunset with an incoming fog bank, and to have sat and watched about 15 or so gray whales feeding in the ocean below. It was pretty cool!

We explored Fern Canyon, a really cool 2 mile hike through this creek and canyon walls lined with all sorts of ferns and downed trees. Small waterfalls trickled down the side of the walls. It was enchanting. We enjoyed Gold Beach, where we saw a herd of Roosevelt Elk feeding. It is funny to see elk by the beach, instead of in the mountains or along the high country valleys as we are so familar with. We let the kids get knocked around by the ocean waves, as did mom, Lindsey, and I. Jax slept through most of that, probably lulled by the sounds of the ocean waves and the warmth of the sun.

We enjoyed the next visiting another area of the Redwoods, but realize there is so much yet to be explored. Countless amazing trails and expeditions unknown left us wanting to return some day to experience more of these majestic trees. We did explore the Crescent Light House, one of the oldest along the California coasts. You have to practically time it to visit on low tide, otherwise it is a no-passage zone. We also checked out the aquarium in Crescent City, which was fun. The kids got to "pet a shark." They loved that!

All in all, our family road trip and vacation was time well spent. I can't wait for our next adventure.

Updates and Such

It's been sometime since I last updated the blog, but figured I better get on it. The school year is in full swing and we've been busy, as usual doing all the things we do between parenting, enjoying our weekends, and routine. No major projects are holding us back this year, so we've been trying to soak up every ounce of the ending seasons as we can. Fall was slow to start here, but her beauty and glory haven't left and I am sure will stick around well into November. That is the fortunate part of the PACNW. Here are the highlights up to this point: August Jax started Preschool and Maddy is in the 3rd grade. So far, they are doing well. Jax loves going to school and is always eager when he gets to "ride the bus to Maddy's school." Here are their annual school pics: Jumping into 3rd Grade September We enjoyed a few adventures, from hiking, whale watching, and camping. We camped at our favorite spot along the Strait...

Cape Alava Camping Adventure!

We are definitely trying to make the most of our time in Washington and since the weather has been gradually warming up, with beautiful blue skies and sunshine, we cannot resist getting outside. And, because hiking is free and camping is pretty inexpensive, we have been doing A LOT of it lately. Granted, our excursion to Oregon was not cheap, it was still a pretty inexpensive weekend getaway and worth the drive! In her new hiking pack Cape Alava at high tide Crossing a bridge We discovered one place, though, called Cape Alava, via one of our trail/hiking books. We went out last weekend, and it is a good 3 mile hike to the coast, from Lake Ozette, and then another 3 mile hike back to the parking area, (so 6 round trip). The loop itself, to Sand Point, is 9 miles total. We got there when tide was fairly high, so we didn't travel down the coast too far, as you can make a complete loop (3 miles down the beach and then another 3 miles on a second trail, that splits at th...

For the future's not ours to see...

There is so much going on in our world today that is negative. I get irritated with watching the news and seeing such drama the media portrays. I never really paid that much attention to it until I had Madelynne and then everything changed about my perception of the world. It is scary, out there, when all you want to do is shelter and protect your little one. Maybe I am coming to the terms with growing older and realizing that life on this great planet is limited and to make the most of it. Being a SAH mom has really caused me to think and reflect on so many different things. It hasn’t always been sweet, happy thoughts, either. I know a few weeks ago I was really concerned for the end of the world and for my daughter and future generations that have to endure such drastic changes that will continue to occur over time. I find myself getting caught up with questions about my faith and my journey as a Christian and feeling lost and not knowing who to turn to or talk to about such conflict...
